What is an Irregular Period?

Period irregularities are referred to as “oligomenorrhea”. Although it is typical in younger women, but also this could be in adult women brought on by underlying health conditions.

When a woman’s cycle changes, her periods become irregular. For instance, her period can typically last 28 days for her before it may increase to 40 days. When you have irregular periods, your period may last longer or shorter than usual, and you may also drop more or less blood.

  • Periods that occur fewer than 21 days or more than 35 days apart.
  • Missing three or more periods in a row.
  • Menstrual flow (bleeding) that’s much heavier or lighter than usual.
  • Periods that last longer than seven days.
  • Length of time between cycles varies by more than nine days. For example, one cycle is 28 days, the next is 37 days and the next is 29 days.
  • Periods that are accompanied by severe pain, cramping, nausea or vomiting.
  • Bleeding or spotting that happens between periods, after menopause or after sexual intercourse.
  • Soaking through one or more tampons or sanitary pads in an hour.

Types of Irregular Periods

There are four types of Irregular periods:-

  • Menorrhagia & Polymenorrhea – This is the most prevalent types of bleeding. It is characterized by heavy bleeding or excessive bleeding(prolonged). With menorrhagia, menstrual flow lasts longer and is heavier than normal.
  • Dysmenorrhea – In this type, pain occurs in the lower abdomen but can spread to the lower back and thighs. Dysmenorrhea is the term for painful menstrual periods.
  • Amenorrhea – It is the condition when a women doesn’t have periods by age 15. Amenorrhea is of two types- Primary & Secondary. It could be the symptom of another diseaes.
  • Hypomenorrhea – They are characterized by light periods. Periods often lasts less than two days, or it is less than 80ml. This is the opposite condition of “Menorrhagia”.
